Fort Sumter

Flat Stanley's first adventure was to
Ft. Sumter in Charleston, SC.

Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter is a Third System masonry sea fort located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The fort is best known as the site upon which the shots which started the American Civil War were fired, at the Battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Wikipedia

Flat Stanley got to ride on the boat from Charleston out to the fort.  While he was there we taught him about cannons and flags.  The girls also learned about the different types of cannons and the past and present flags that fly on Ft. Sumter.  Along with Flat Stanley the girls completed a hunt for facts and became Junior Rangers!

We learned about the first shot and battle of the Civil War.  Union troops occupied Ft. Sumter after Lincoln was elected President.  The Fort was surrounded by other forts which were occupied by Southern troops.  They fired a warning shot which began a 36 hour long battle.  The Southerners won that battle.  No one was killed from the battle and the Union troops were aloud to leave.  Today the fort is nothing like what it once was, but it was still a lot of fun to explore.
